What Is Interactive Christian Art?
Interactive Christian art is hand-painted canvas that responds to the viewer’s presence — through touch, motion, or augmented reality activated by a mobile app. Ivan Guaderrama is the pioneer of this discipline within Christian art, and his catalog of interactive pieces is the only one in the world that combines traditional contemporary Christian painting with proprietary augmented reality (AR) technology developed by the artist himself.
An interactive piece by Ivan is, first, a painting — built on canvas with oil, acrylic, and Ivan’s proprietary Live Texture technique (developed 2004), which combines pigment with marble dust and resin to create three-dimensional surfaces. Some pieces also incorporate the Glass Expression technique (2010), applying resins, color, and electrical effects to glass. The AR layer is composed by Ivan specifically for each artwork — it doesn’t decorate the painting, it deepens it.
How the AR App Works
The free Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery app is available on both major mobile platforms. The experience requires no headset, no glasses, no setup — just a phone or tablet pointed at the canvas:
- Download the app free on the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- Open the app and point your device’s camera at any AR-enabled Ivan Guaderrama painting (in the gallery or in your home).
- Watch the AR layer activate — animations, prayers, scripture overlays, or musical accompaniment specific to that piece appear over the canvas in real time.
The app recognizes each registered painting by its visual signature — no QR codes, no markers attached to the canvas. The artwork itself is the trigger. Over 28 paintings in the active catalog are currently AR-enabled, and Ivan adds new pieces to the library as he completes them in the studio.

The Story Behind the Innovation
Ivan Guaderrama has been an active artist since 2005 and founded his gallery in San José del Cabo in 2009. The interactive AR work emerged from a question he raised in his studio around 2014: “If technology can extend almost everything we do, why hasn’t it extended the experience of a painting?”
He spent the following years developing the app, the recognition pipeline, and the painting-by-painting AR composition workflow that today powers the catalog. The work has been exhibited internationally — at NASA, the Empire State Building, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, One & Only Resorts, Flora Farms, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any special equipment to experience the AR art?
No special equipment — just your smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android). The free Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery app uses the device camera and image recognition; no headset, no glasses, no QR codes attached to the painting.
Does the AR app work without Wi-Fi?
After the initial download and one-time activation (which requires internet), the app and its painting library work offline. This is intentional — the gallery in San José del Cabo serves many international visitors, and roaming data isn’t always reliable.
Are non-AR pieces also “interactive”?
Yes. A subset of Ivan’s interactive pieces uses physical sensors embedded in the canvas — touch activates sound, music, or LED effects without needing the app at all. These pieces are independent of the AR catalog and require no phone or tablet to experience.
How long does the AR layer remain compatible?
The Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery app is maintained continuously and updated to support current iOS and Android versions. Registered paintings have persistent identifiers, so the AR experience continues to function for the lifetime of the painting. If a future technology shift ever requires migration, registered owners are notified directly.
Can I add AR to a painting I already own?
For pieces purchased directly from Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery, yes — Ivan can compose a custom AR layer for an existing painting on commission.
