San José del Cabo Art District
The San José del Cabo Art District — also called the Gallery District (Distrito del Arte) — is the cultural heart of Los Cabos, Mexico. Located behind the historic Plaza Mijares and the 18th-century church of San José, the district concentrates a dozen certified fine-art galleries within four walkable cobblestone blocks. It is the home of Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery and the heart of the weekly Thursday Night Art Walk.
What Is the San José del Cabo Art District?
The Art District is a compact, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood of contemporary art galleries, artisan boutiques, restaurants, and historic buildings just steps from the main square (Plaza Mijares) of San José del Cabo. The district is anchored by twelve certified member galleries of the Gallery District Association (Asociación del Distrito del Arte), each showcasing original paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, jewelry, and crafts by Mexican, North American, and international contemporary artists.
Unlike a single museum or a commercial mall, the Art District is a living neighborhood: most galleries occupy restored 19th- and early-20th-century homes, with thick adobe walls, arched doorways, and interior patios that double as exhibition space. Many of the artists live and work above or behind their galleries, and several open their studios to visitors year-round.
A Brief History of the District
San José del Cabo itself was founded in the early 1700s as a Spanish mission town, and the streets surrounding the plaza preserve that colonial layout to this day. The transformation into an art district began in the late 20th century, when a handful of painters, sculptors, and ceramists started opening small galleries in the historic homes around the church.
The modern Art Walk tradition traces back to the early 2000s, when three local artists began printing simple brochures and walking them around the neighborhood to draw foot traffic into their galleries on Thursday evenings. That informal effort grew into the Gallery District Association, which today coordinates the weekly Art Walk, manages the official gallery map, and works with the municipality to keep the streets clean, lit, and — during high season — closed to vehicles on Thursday nights.
Galleries in the District
The Gallery District Association recognizes twelve certified member galleries. Each operates Monday–Saturday year-round and stays open late for the Thursday Art Walk during the November–June season:

- Patricia Mendoza Gallery — Contemporary Mexican and international fine-art painting and sculpture. Álvaro Obregón at Plaza Mijares, Centro.

The official member list and gallery map are maintained by the Gallery District Association at artcabo.com. Several non-member galleries, jewelry studios, and artisan shops also operate inside the district and participate informally in the Thursday Art Walk.
The Thursday Night Art Walk
The signature event of the district is the Thursday Night Art Walk, held every Thursday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM during the November-through-June season. For four hours, all twelve member galleries open their doors, the streets are closed to car traffic, and visitors are welcomed with complimentary refreshments, live music, and — in many galleries — the opportunity to meet the artists in person.
The Art Walk is free and open to the public. No tickets, no reservations, no dress code. Most visitors walk the full loop in two to three hours, stopping at galleries that catch their eye and ending the evening at one of the restaurants or wine bars on Plaza Mijares.

Map and Directions
The Art District sits in the historic center of San José del Cabo, immediately behind the church and Plaza Mijares. The four main gallery streets are:
- Álvaro Obregón — the main spine of the district, closed to cars during the Thursday Art Walk.
- Morelos — parallel to Obregón, with several galleries and studios.
- Guerrero — connecting cross street with additional galleries and restaurants.
- Comonfort — perpendicular to Obregón, anchoring the western edge of the district.
From the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), the district is approximately a 20-minute drive south on Highway 1. From Cabo San Lucas, allow 30–40 minutes by car or shuttle, depending on traffic on the Corridor. Uber and certified taxis operate throughout Los Cabos and can drop visitors at Plaza Mijares.
Best Time to Visit
The Art District is open year-round, but the peak season runs from November through June, when the Thursday Art Walk is in full swing and the weather in Baja California Sur is dry and mild. The summer months (July through October) are quieter, warmer, and occasionally affected by tropical weather — but the individual galleries remain open and visitors often enjoy a more intimate, unhurried experience.
For collectors planning a buying trip, weekday mornings between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM are ideal for private viewings, custom commissions, and conversations with gallery owners. Thursday evening is best for first-time visitors and casual browsing.
Where to Park and Stay
Free street parking is available around the perimeter of the historic center on most days. On Thursday evenings during the Art Walk, several streets close to traffic — visitors should plan to park within a 2–4 block radius of Plaza Mijares and walk in. Paid parking lots are available near the Mega supermarket and along Boulevard Mijares.
Recommended boutique hotels within walking distance of the Art District include El Encanto Inn, Tropicana Inn, and Casa Natalia. Larger resort options on the Tourist Corridor and in Cabo San Lucas are a 20–40 minute drive away and easily accessible by taxi or shuttle.

Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery is a founding member of the district and one of the most visited galleries on the Thursday Art Walk. The gallery is best known for three bodies of work: the Smiling Jesus Collection, the Interactive Augmented Reality (AR) paintings, and the contemporary Heart Series.
The gallery is open Monday–Saturday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and stays open until 9:00 PM on Thursday Art Walk nights. Visitors are welcome to walk in without an appointment; private viewings and custom commissions can be arranged by phone (+52 624 189 1144) or through our contact page.
